I breed (hopefully) show dogs, specifically Great Danes, we've been fortunate, out of two breedings we have had four quality show dogs, two have finished their AKC championships.
New puppy owners often inquire about showing, how to, what's the process, where do we go from here.
I advise them to get their puppies in obedience classes first, then find a local handling class to attend.
And we have a frank discussion about what constitutes a show dog. Litters are evaluated for show or companion quality, normally by other breeders, handlers or, in our case, a dog show Judge. If their new puppy was deemed companion quality, does that mean the dog can't be shown. Of course not, we sell companion dogs on a limited registration, but that can be lifted if they are serious and are responsible pet owners. We have sold some companion puppies could have been great show dogs.
The question always comes up about finding a mentor, not an easy task. Is a mentor absolutely essential?
How does one advise a new puppy owner to find an honest mentor?
Feedback would be appreciated.
